Bio

Hannah Wharton is an accomplished Mechanical Engineer and Project Management Professional (PMP) with 14+ years of experience in the customer-serving government and utility sectors. She is a detailoriented leader skilled in project development, product and system development from design to construction, decision-making, and budget and schedule analysis. Hannah is currently a Mechanical Engineering Manager working in the Design & Engineering (D&E) Facilities Operations Organization at the Department of Defense (DOD). She provides guidance, motivation, support, and development opportunities to a team of diverse engineers, while contributing to initiatives that support the success of D&E. Hannah uses her project management experience to improve her team’s understanding of project life cycles and the importance of collaboration and building a network, thus enabling them to apply a well-rounded approach to delivering enhanced products and services. Prior to her management position, she worked as a project manager in the Project Execution Facilities Operations Organization at DOD, managing many major construction efforts on campus.
Hannah began her career in 2004 with L-3 Communications – Applied Signal and Image Technology working several years as a mechanical engineer supporting signal communications systems. She then joined Baltimore Gas & Electric (BGE) as a Project Manager in the Asset Management Services Division in 2008, where she worked on several complex projects that improved BGE’s electrical system. While working at BGE, Hannah was nominated and received the Modern Day Technology Leader Award that was presented during the 2011 Black Engineer of the Year (BEYA) Awards STEM Global Competiveness Conference because of her technical abilities, valuable leadership in business, commitment to her work and team members, customer service, and potential for advancement.
Hannah earned a B.S in Mechanical Engineering and an M.S. in Engineering Management, with concentration in Design and Manufacturing from the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). She began her days at UMBC also minoring in Music, but decided not to pursue her minor in order to focus on her mechanical engineering degree. However, Hannah satisfies her love of music and that part of her life by singing as an active worship leader at her church. She is wife and a mother of a 6-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son and enjoys spending time with her family, watching movies, and working on home improvement projects including interior design and decorating.
Hannah has been an active leader in her community as a member of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training Program, where she raised money to support medical research and successfully completed her first half-marathon. She was active in BGE’s volunteering efforts, such as participating in several United Way campaign fundraisers. Hannah has also helped to shape the future of elementary school children by guest-speaking at the Groovy Science Night hosted by Howard County’s Ilchester Elementary School, as well as being a STEM Fair judge at Baltimore County’s Allenwood Elementary School.
Hannah enjoys being a leader at work as well as in her community because she gets to work and collaborate with friends, customers, and professional colleagues from different disciplines and diverse backgrounds while participating in shaping the future for engineering, science, and technology.
