Kevin Martin, Manager Design Engineering I, graduated from Virginia State University with a Bachelor of Science Industrial Technology degree in 1981. Recruited from college, his 37 year to present career was established at Huntington Ingalls – Newport News Shipbuilding. He began as a Submarine Propulsion Plant Designer in the Machinery Design Department developing new and modified Ships Arrangements, Machinery and Piping Design. He went on to work and led several projects for the company such as 688 Class Submarine Modifications, Seawolf Submarine New Design, and Commercial New Design Double Eagle- Double Hull Tanker Domestic/ International versions. As Non Propulsion Area Team Lead Design Supervisor, he managed the Design Integration and Coordination of teaming across all functional areas within the Ford Class Carrier CVN 78 organization with System Leads, Designers and representatives from the Fleet and Construction. He was the Engineering Lead for Complex Assemblies on CVN 79 Cost Saving Initiative. Kevin received a 2014 Black Engineer of the Year (BEYA) STEM Award – Modern Day Technology Leader. Kevin helped to initiate and managed the Engineering and Design Rotation Program with Cohorts focusing on career development of select Engineers and Designers. This program is now called the PEER Rotation Program. He developed and executed program career guidelines and schedules. Kevin went on to lead Projects supporting System Engineering Integration on the Human Factors and Ergonomics Team. This team determines the Trade shop Mechanic, Foreman and General Foreman needs and translates into requirements to identify an engineered solution to improve Safety and reduce repetitive motion in the work environment. He also served as Project Manager for ManTech projects overseeing new and ongoing Contracted Research and Development (CRAD) projects. He also supervised a 3D Product Modeling group for Columbia Class submarine design. Currently, Kevin is leading a team on Ford Carrier Class CVN 78, 78PSA, 79 and 80 providing multiple system construction drawings in support of current Carrier Build Strategy and future Integrated Digital Shipbuilding.
