Bio
Gloria B. Wims grew up in Washington, DC. As a child she always knew she wanted to major in a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math field before the word “STEM” was widely used. After graduating from high school, Gloria entered college as an architect major. She later transferred schools, changed majors, and graduated with a degree in computer science from North Carolina A&T State University.
With almost 25 years in supporting Department of Defense, Gloria landed her ideal job at General Dynamics Mission Systems as a Senior Technical/Resource Engineering manager. Since starting with General Dynamics in 2004, Gloria has managed up to 90 employees all over the world. As a sub-contractor to another DoD company, she has managed over 15 projects simultaneously with a 90% or more award fee.
Gloria has managed the intern program out of the Annapolis Junction, MD office for the last 5 years. In selecting interns, along with a technical interviewer, Gloria reviews several hundred resumes each year from college recruiting, diversity events, and company referrals. Not surprisingly for her, she still continues to keep in touch with most of her formal interns through social media and company email, for those who still work for the company.
Her passions are engineering and promoting STEM for today’s youth. When Gloria’s profile was featured on her General Dynamic’s website three years ago, they asked her several questions about herself:
• What words best describe you? She responded, “Caring and having a strong sense of community.”
• Complete the sentence: Happiness is ____? Her response advocated, “Helping others and giving back to the community.”
Both responses were indicative of how Gloria lives her life at the office as well as at home, and others are witnesses to her living out these passions as well. As such, in 2012, she was recognized as a Technology Rising Star for her leadership skills in technical management at the Women of Color Conference in Detroit, Michigan. Even now, in 2018, Gloria’s passions still ring true as she strives to bring more youth, women, and those of color in her community to STEM careers and related fields and other course work in education as well as in practice.
